Regular replacement is neccessary to avoid damaging the engine by overheating because of insufficient cooling, or because of broken impeller parts being sent to the engine.

The raw sea water pump housing is located on the side of the engine behind the water pump connected to the belts. If you are hearing unusual noises from the water pump or the engine is overheating, the pump impeller may be broken and the housing is scored inside.
